Türkiye guiding regulations
The licensed guiding rules
Türkiye has one of the strictest professional-guiding frameworks in the world. It exists to protect both heritage sites and travellers — and we follow it without exception. Here's what the law requires, and what you can expect from any guide we send you.
Licence is required by law
Under Türkiye's Tour Guiding Profession Law (No. 6326), only individuals holding a state-issued professional tour-guide licence may conduct paid tours of museums, archaeological sites and historical monuments.
University-trained & state-examined
Licensed guides hold a tourism-guidance degree (or accredited certificate programme) and pass the national examination administered by the Ministry of Culture & Tourism.
Language certification
Each guide is licensed in one or more specific foreign languages — verified by the Ministry. We confirm your guide's language certification before assignment.
Regional & national licences
Some guides are licensed for a specific region (e.g. Cappadocia, Ephesus); others hold a national licence valid across all 81 provinces. We assign the right level for your itinerary.
Annual TUREB registration
Working guides must be active members of TUREB (Union of Tourist Guides Chambers) and renew their professional ID card each year — we verify validity for every assigned guide.
Visible ID at all times
By regulation, your guide will wear or carry their official photo licence card on tour. You may always ask to see it — this is your guarantee of an authorised, insured professional.
A note for travellers: if you book a "tour" in Türkiye and the person leading you cannot show a Ministry-issued guide ID, that tour is operating illegally — and you're not insured. With Life Istanbul Tours, every guide is licensed, registered and verified.
